One of the greatest challenges to growth, improvement, and operational excellence in any organization is the availability of good leadership. Leaders play a primary role in establishing workplace culture and in shaping the quality and pace of the laboratory's progress over time.  Good leaders inspire others to find self-motivation, greater creativity, and increased productivity, and to build team spirit. Despite the importance of good leadership to the success of any organization, relatively few in leadership roles have received training and exposure on how to become an effective and good leader. For many laboratory professionals, leadership skills and style develop through mentoring by senior scientists, managers, and directors in the workplace. While there are clear benefits from sound mentoring, bad habits and ineffective behaviors and strategies can also be adopted. Moreover, good mentoring alone is insufficient to produce good leadership skills; thus, there is a need for structured training and guidance. We need to address this gap by providing instructional materials to help the leaders in laboratory medicine toward more effective leadership strategies and practices.
